Noriko Ogawa ( Japanese 小川 典 子 , Ogawa Noriko ; born January 28, 1962 in Kawasaki , Kanagawa Prefecture ) is a Japanese pianist.

biography

After establishing herself as a successful pianist in Japan, Ogawa began her career in Europe when she took third place in the 1987 Leeds International Piano Competition . She subsequently performed with many well-known orchestras in Great Britain (including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Philharmonic , Philharmonia, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra , National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Hallé Orchestra , Royal Philharmonic , Orchestra of St. John's Smith Square) and other European countries (e.g. St. Petersburg Philharmonic , Gothenburg Symphony , Tapiola Sinfonietta (Finland), Stavanger Symphony Orchestra). She also had TV appearances in Japan with the NHK and toured with the NHK symphony orchestra .

She played the world premiere of Richard Dubugnon's Piano Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra . In 2012 she was Artistic Director of the Reflections on Debussy Festival at Bridgewater Hall . At the 2013 Proms she played Malcolm Arnold's Concerto for Two Pianos with Kathryn Stott . On CD she has recorded works by Robert Schumann , Claude Debussy , Sergei Rachmaninow and Modest Mussorgsky , as well as the entire piano works by Toru Takemitsu , piano concertos by Alexander Tscherepnin , compositions by Harald Saeverud and Wilhelm Peterson-Berger , piano works by Japanese composers and works for piano and cello. The Korean violinist Dong-Suk Kang is a regular chamber music partner .

Ogawa is a professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and a visiting professor at the Tokyo University of Music . She has acted as a juror in various piano competitions, including the BBC Young Musician Competition , the Munich International Piano Competition , the Honens International Piano Competition and the Scottish International Piano Competition . She founded Jamie's Concerts for autistic children and their parents , and is an ambassador for the National Autistic Society .
