Norman Bor
Norman Loftus Bor (born May 2, 1893 in Tramore , County Waterford , † December 22, 1972 in London ) was an Irish botanist. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Bor ".
Bor went to school in Dublin and graduated from Trinity College Dublin (initially medicine) and the University of Edinburgh (botany) with a B.Sc. 1921. In between he served as a soldier in World War I and was wounded. After his studies he was in the Indian Forest Service, in which he stayed until 1948 when he became deputy director of the Botanical Garden in Kew . In 1959 he retired.
In India he was first chief forester in Assam, then in Shillong and Balipara and published the Indian Forester . As a botanist, he was particularly concerned with sweet grasses . In addition to those from the Indian subcontinent, he also dealt with those from Cyprus, Iran and Iraq.
He was a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London and received its Linné Medal in 1962 . He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (1947), a member of the Indian National Science Academy and President of the Indian Botanical Society.
Bor traveled a lot as a botanist in Europe and also in Germany and spoke very good German.
Honors
In his honor, the bamboo genus Borinda was named by Chris Stapleton in 1994 .
In 1948 he received a Sc.D. from Trinity College Dublin for his study of the flora of Assam and a D. Sc. the University of Edinburgh for his work on synecology in the woods of Assam.
