Norman Longmate

Norman Richard Longmate (born December 15, 1925 in Newbury , Berkshire , † June 4, 2016 ) was an English social and military historian and author.

Longmate attended Christ's Hospital private school in West Sussex. After his military service, he taught modern history at Worcester College , Oxford. He then worked as a journalist , as a history documentary producer for the BBC and in the BBC's secretariat. From 1983 he worked as a freelance author. From 1981 he was a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society .

He wrote over twenty books. His best-known book is How We Lived Then (1971), which uses self-testimonies to describe everyday life in the UK during World War II.
