Before joining Mad , Mingo drew comic strips and themed drawings for magazines and book covers as well as sexy pin-ups for men's magazines such as the American Weekly Journal, Ladies' Home Journal, Pictorial Review and many others.

In 1956 he applied for a job advertisement for the US satirical magazine Mad, where he was hired as an illustrator. His best-known figure is probably Alfred E. Neumann (only Neuman in the original). Mingo left Mad in 1957, but returned in 1962 and designed most of the magazine's covers by 1976. His last work appeared in issue no. 211 in December 1979. Mingo lived in the greater Chicago area for many years, but spent his old age in Tarrytown, New York .
