Nortada

Praia do Guincho : Here the Nortada is reinforced.

The Nortada (Portuguese; " north wind ") is a summer wind along the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula from northern directions, which occurs there mainly between June and September.

The main wind direction is north - northeast . The wind is primarily caused by a low heat over the Iberian Peninsula and a high in the Azores over the Atlantic . The months with the highest frequency of heat dips coincide with the months with the most frequent occurrence of Nortada. The wind is strengthened locally by thermal but also orographic influences such as B. mountain ranges . In the coastal area, the wind often leads to upwelling of cold water from deeper layers , which often leads to an increase in the wind.

A popular surf spot for windsurfers and kitesurfers where such local reinforcement occurs is, for example, Praia do Guincho near Lisbon . A reinforcement also occurs at Praia do Martinhal in Sagres , where the wind then blows fully offshore.
