North-American Interfraternity Conference

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC, North American connection cross-Assembly), established on 27 November 1909 as Interfraternity Conference is an association of male student fraternities of North American fraternities and sororities .

Although the association was founded on November 27, 1909, the institutions were not established until 1910. The highest organ is the House of Delegates , to which each association appoints a representative. The executive power lies in the hands of the elected board of directors , which consists of nine honorary members of various connections. The head office of the association is located in Indianapolis, where the umbrella organization employs several full-time organizers.

The objectives of the NIC include, among other things, promoting joint activities by the student associations on a wide variety of occasions, investigating affairs and procedures of the member organizations, ascertaining facts and collecting figures and making them available to the member associations in a suitable form ( “but not be limited to, promotion of cooperative action in dealing with fraternity matters of mutual concern, research in areas of fraternity operations and procedures, fact-finding and data gathering, and the dissemination of such data to the member fraternities. " ). However, the activities of the umbrella organization must in no way hinder or question the rights of the member associations to their own self-administration ( “[c] conference action shall not in any way abrogate the right of its member fraternities to self-determination.” ).

In 2007, the NIC had a total of 69 member associations, which are connected to more than 5,500 local associations ( chapters ) at more than 800 universities in the USA and Canada, which support a total of approximately 350,000 association students. The original name Interfraternity Conference was changed to National Interfraternity Conference in 1931 . In order to adequately represent the Canadian connections, the name was finally changed to North-American Interfraternity Conference in 1999 .
