Delta Phi ( ΔΦ ) is a fraternity founded in 1827 at Union College in Schenectady , New York . It belongs to the Union Triad and thus to the oldest still existing student associations in the USA and is the third and last member of the triad next to Kappa Alpha and Sigma Phi .
background
When the Union Triad was founded, there were strong reservations about Masonic efforts in the United States. Originally organized as secret societies , student circles also became the target of the reservations. Phi Beta Kappa , among others, organized itself as a professionally oriented honor society instead of a secret society. At the beginning of the 1830s, Eliphalet Nott , President of Union College, began campaigning for the dissolution of all fraternities. John Jay Hyde , a member of the Delta Phi, could stop him. Hyde constructed the badge, which is still worn today, in the form of a Maltese cross . The reference to the Order of Malta gave Delta Phi the nickname The St. Elmo Club , which first came up with the Omicron Chapter of Yale University .
This former chapter of Delta Phi in Yale, the St. Elmo (compound) founded in 1889 has split off and is now a separate classic class-related secret society for advanced students and is owned by Skull and Bones , Scroll and Key , Wolf's Head , Book and Snake , Elihu , Berzelius (connection) and Mace and Chain to the ancient eight senior societies in Yale.
Delta Phi in the present
Delta Phi is still an exclusive and relatively small fraternity. Expansion is being carried out primarily with regard to earlier, no longer active chapters. Delta Phi is the third oldest fraternity in the United States and sees itself as the longest continuously active fraternity in the United States. In the case of the Gamma Chapter at New York University, the longest continuously active connection in the world is assumed, having been active without interruption since 1841.
