North Australia (colony)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Australia 1846

North Australia was a British colony from 1846 to 1847 in the north and northeast of the Australian continent. Their area included what is now the northern territory and that part of what is now the state of Queensland that was north of latitude 26 degrees south.

The colonial capital was Port Curtis , now Gladstone . Lieutenant Governor and Superintendent was Colonel George Barney . Charles Augustus FitzRoy , the governor of New South Wales , was appointed governor.

There was much criticism of the establishment of North Australia as a convict colony , because it took place after England had stopped transporting convicts to Australia. The colony was officially dissolved in December 1846, but it was not until 1847 that it was de facto dissolved.
