The North Bay Railway (NBR) is a park railway in Scarborough , North Yorkshire , England. It was built in 1931 to measure 20 inches (508 mm) and 1.4 km (3/4 miles) in length between Peasholm Park and Scalby Mills on the North Bay.

opening

The opening ceremony took place on May 23, 1931. The chairman of the North Side Development Committee , Alderman Whitehead, handed the mayor of Scarborough, Alderman JW Butler, the locomotive to Neptune for his entertainment department . He gave the following short speech:

"On behalf of the National Union of Engine Drivers, Technicians, and others, I am handing you, as the first engine driver on the North Bay Railway locomotive, the mark of your dignity, an oil can and a cleaning rag." ( On behalf of the National Union of Drivers, Engineers and others, I have to present you, the first driver of the North Bay Railway Engine, with your insignia of office, your oil can and your 'sweat rag'. )

The mayor was given a driver's hat, an oil can adorned with a blue ribbon and a rag before he drove the train non-stop to Scalby Mills, where the locomotive was moved to the other end of the train to start the return journey.

Second World War

During the Second World War , the railroad was not in operation because it was in the coastal defense zone . The last train ran on July 6, 1940, and the line remained out of service until the Easter weekend in 1945. The station boards in Peasholm and Scalby Mills as well as those at the Peasholm signal box have been removed for safety reasons. The tunnel under the gardens of Northstead Manor was used as a storage facility for the musical instruments of the Royal Naval School of Music, which was then housed in the Norbreck Hotel.

Locomotives

The four locomotives were all produced by the same manufacturer. The first two initially belonged to the Scarborough Borough Council and were leased to the operating company . The others were owned by the operating company and were originally deployed in Leeds' Golden Acre Park . After its closure they were temporarily used in Morcambe , Kilverstone and Great Woburn Safari Park . They were stored at the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway before being brought to Scarborough in December 2006.

The railroad was built by Robert Hudson Ltd. from Leeds equipped with four-axle bogie cars in 1931 and more were delivered in 1932. Their frames are still in use, but the structure has been renewed several times. In 1960 they were converted into the "toast rack" trolleys customary at the time. In 1991 the structure was renewed again and in 1998 it was made of glass fiber reinforced plastic as a semi-open salon without windows and doors. Eight of these originally ten cars are still in use today (2010) , one is on display in Scalby Mill and the frame of the last is used as a construction workers' train. Two closed wagons were procured in 2007 by Rail Restorations North East Limited in Shildon , which reused the frames of two wagons produced by the Golden Acre Park Railway in the 1930s . There are also several construction vehicles.

Train stations

Scalby train station

There are three train stations on the route:

  • Peasholm: terminus with a single platform at the entrance to Northstead Manor Gardens on Burniston Road. The locomotives can be turned via a turning loop .
  • Beach: Two staggered single platforms at a passing point. Not currently in use.
  • Scalby Mills: Island platform at the Scarborough Sea Life Center . The locomotives can turn over a turntable, previously through a turning loop partially located in a tunnel.

Accidents

In the second season there was a frontal accident at Beach station on July 10, 1932, in which the train driver Herbert Carr was killed at the age of 25 and 31 passengers were injured. Another frontal accident occurred on August 23, 1948, in which 9 people were injured.

privatization

On March 30, 2007, the North Bay Railway Company Limited formally took over operations. She was previously owned and operated by Scarborough Borough Council.
