North British is a whiskey distillery in Edinburgh , Scotland .

history

The distillery was founded in 1885 by the North British Distillery Company , an association of blenders . It was founded around the takeover of the nearby Caledonian distillery by Distillers Company Ltd. (DCL) and the consequent preponderance of DCL in the grain whiskey market . The distillery remained independent until 1983, but was then transferred to Lothian Distillers , a joint venture between the Edrington Group and International Distillers & Vintners (IDV), now part of Diageo .

production

The distillery was built for £ 142,000  and had a maximum production capacity of 114,000 liters per week. However, the capacity has been massively expanded over the years and is currently 1,250,000 l per week. Three coffee stills are used to make the whiskey .

Bottlings

The whiskey produced goes into various well-known blends such as J&B , Famous Grouse , Chivas Regal , Lang's and Cutty Sark . There are no official bottlings from the distillery, but there are various bottlings from independent bottlers.
