North Dumfries is a municipality in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo in the southwest of the Canadian province of Ontario .
geography
The North Dumfries area encompasses the city of Cambridge from the south-west, south and south-east. The parish is 15 kilometers southwest of Waterloo and 50 kilometers northeast of Hamilton . The Highway 401 from Toronto to London , and Macdonald-Cartier Freeway , called cross-cross the territory of North Dumfries.
history
William Dickson bought what is now North Dumfries in 1816 for £ 24,000 and named it after his hometown of Dumfries , Scotland . In the same year he measured the land and in 1817 put the first sawmills into operation. 38 families with a total population of 163 people were counted. In 1819 the first North Dumfries community meeting was held. From 1820 more Scottish settlers immigrated to the region.

In 2006 there was a population of 9063 people with an average age of 39 years. Almost 90% of the population speaks English as their first language.
