North Walsham is a market town in North Norfolk , east England and is located on the River Ant and on the edge of the Norfolk Broads lake district . The city has an area of ​​17.27 km² and 11,998 inhabitants (2001).

Infrastructure

The city has a train station on the railway line between Norwich (approx. 20 km) and Sheringham (approx. 12 km), a lively center with numerous shops, a weekly market and pubs, as well as several schools, a city library and an indoor swimming pool.

Attractions

Narrow streets dating back to the Middle Ages lead through the city, in the heart of which is the Church of St. Nicholas. The market square is dominated by the “Market Cross”, a roofed, listed circular building from the 16th century, where market interest was previously collected. The Anglican parish church of St. Nicholas dates from the 13th century. Its main external feature is the ruins of the originally 45 m high church tower, which collapsed in 1724 and is only about 20 m high today. There are numerous historical sights in the church, e. B. the carved Gothic canopy over the baptismal font or the tomb of Sir William Paston, the founder of the local school (today the high school Paston College ). The church is embedded in lawns, on the edge of which historical gravestones form an interesting frame.
