The Northern Fury Football Club ( Northern Fury FC for short ) is a football club from the eastern Australian city of Townsville in the state of Queensland , whose first team played two seasons in the A-League . The club has played in the Queensland National Premier League since 2013 .

history

As early as the 2007/08 season there was an application from Townsville for a place in the A-League for the first time after the New Zealand Knights had their license withdrawn. A consortium called Tropical Football applied for the vacated space. However, the Australian Association preferred to continue to let a team from New Zealand participate in the game and ultimately granted the license to Wellington Phoenix .

A year later there was a renewed application under the name Northern Thunder (partly also North Queensland Thunder ) and an entry for the 2008/09 season provided. Shortly before the admission decision, the most important donor withdrew from the project and a week later the association refused admission "in the interest of the competition" again.

There were a total of ten applications for the following season, including two from Townsville. In addition to a candidacy led by businessman Don Matheson, which was the successor to the rejected Northern Thunder application, a consortium chaired by businesswoman Milissa Fischer, who withdrew from Northern Thunder a few months earlier, also applied. The Matheson consortium received a provisional license on July 24, and acceptance was finally confirmed a month later.

On November 6, 2008, the club name North Queensland Fury FC was announced.

There were some problems in the first season in the A-League. The average attendance was not very high and financial problems arose, which is why all players' contracts were terminated after the first season. It didn't go well in terms of sport either. Before the second season, the ownership changed, and František Straka was the new coach. Some players from the first season got contracts again, but the team was completely rebuilt and supplemented with rather unknown players, which is why North Queensland Fury was considered a big underdog in the league.

In late 2012, the club was brought back to life and renamed Northern Fury FC . However, the logo and the club colors remain. In 2013 they started in the National Premier League Queensland . The coach of the new team was initially the former player Gareth Edds.
