Northfleet

Northfleet is a town in the Gravesham administrative area in Kent , England with almost 30,000 inhabitants (2011). The area without municipal status ("unparished") is immediately west of Gravesend .

The place already existed in Roman times .

Name history

The name is derived from the river Fleet (now Ebbsfleet ). It developed through the Saxons as follows: Fleote around 600 AD, Flyote around 900 AD and Flete around 1000 AD. In the Domesday Book the place was referred to as Norfluete and in 1201 as Northflet . The name Northfleet has prevailed since 1610.
