The Northwest River is an approximately 67 km long river in the east of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Newfoundland Island .

River course

The Northwest River forms the outflow of a nameless 190  m high lake in the central east of Newfoundland. The headwaters are located 10 km northeast of Lake Meta Pond . The Northwest River initially flows 10 km north and then turns to the northeast. There are numerous lakes in the upper reaches. At river kilometer 42 the outflow of Ocean Lake flows into the Northwest River on the right side. The Terra Nova River flows over a distance of 20 km 3.5 km further west also in a northeast direction. The course of the Northwest River is within the Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve up to river kilometer 20 . 10 km above the mouth, the Northwest River flows through the small Northwest Pond and then turns east. For the last 2.2 km it flows through the extreme south of the Terra Nova National Park before flowing into the northwest end of Clode Sound . The estuary is 3 miles north-northwest of Port Blandford parish . The Trans-Canada Highway crosses the river 500 m above the mouth. The Twin River Golf Course stretches along the lowest 1.7 kilometers of the river .

Hydrology

The Northwest River drains an area of ​​663 km². The mean discharge is 20.4 m³ / s. The highest monthly discharges usually occur in April with an average of 54.9 m³ / s.

Wildlife

The salmon population in the Northwest River system is considered "not threatened". In addition, probably following other types of fish: speckled trout , lake trout , three-spined and nine-spined stickleback , Arctic Norway , American eel and the sea lamprey . Other typical aquatic inhabitants are the Canadian beaver , muskrat and North American otter, as well as Lithobates clamitans , a species of frog introduced on the island of Newfoundland.
