Bombus norvegicus , also known as the Norwegian cuckoo bumblebee , is a bumblebee species from the subgenus of the cuckoo bumblebees .

The species was first described by Jacob Sparre Schneider , a Norwegian, in 1918. The Latin name is reminiscent of his native Norway. The species was first discovered in the Netherlands in 1942.

Appearance

The cuckoo bumblebee is medium-sized.

female

The female is black with a wide collar on the chest and a white band on the abdomen. The body length of the females is 18-20 mm. Your antennae consist of 12 segments. The mandibles are elongated and slightly curved. The back is black. The third tergite on the side and the fourth completely covered with yellow hair. It has a sting on the abdomen.

Drones

The male's abdomen is reddish and has two yellow spots. The body length of the drones is 13-17 mm. Your antennae consist of 13 segments. The front part of the back is covered with yellow hair. The scutellum is black. The third and fourth tergite and the underside of the first tergite have white hairs. The fifth and seventh tergite have brownish hair. The drone has no sting, but claw-shaped genitals.

Way of life

The Norwegian cuckoo bumblebee is a breeding parasite that raises its brood in the nests of the tree bumblebee ( Bombus hypnorum ). It lives in meadows, forest edges and clearings.

Distribution area

Distribution areas include Finland , Lithuania , Poland , Germany , Luxembourg , Belgium , France , Switzerland , Italy , Slovenia , Austria , the Czech Republic , Slovakia and Romania . It extends from the European Atlantic coast, the Pyrenees, Central Europe, Scandinavia as well as Siberia and Japan in the east. It has been sighted in Tibet and the Chinese provinces of Jilin, Liaoning, Sichuan and Yunnan.
