Norwegian Helsinki Committee
The Norwegian Helsinki Committee ( Norwegian Den norske Helsingforskomité ; English Norwegian Helsinki Committee ) is a non-governmental organization that campaigns for the preservation of human rights.
history
The committee was founded in 1977 in Oslo as one of the first to help implement the results of the final act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe in Helsinki .
It had been a member of the International Helsinki Association since 1978 and one of the co-founders of the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights in 1982 (until 2007). Today it is a member of the International League for Human Rights ( Fédération internationale des ligues des droits de l'Homme ). 15 employees work for the organization.
activities
The committee works to improve basic human and civil rights, especially in the successor states of the USSR and Yugoslavia , as well as in Albania . It supports improvements in the rights of minorities, freedom of the press, the strengthening of democratic institutions, freedom of assembly and expression and other rights.
The committee prepares reports on the situation in individual countries. It monitors the correct conduct of parliamentary elections. The Norwegian Helsinki Committee actively supports human rights organizations in Eastern and Southeastern Europe. It advocates the improvement of human and civil rights in international organizations and national governments.
The Committee works with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the Council of Europe and bodies of the United Nations . It participates in events of the UN Human Rights Council and the United Nations General Assembly .
The committee has awarded the Andrei Sakharov Freedom Prize to human rights activists and organizations since 1980.
