Emergency doctor motorcycle

Emergency doctor motorcycle in Hungary (National Ambulance Service Hungary)

An emergency doctor can drive to the rescue operation with the emergency doctor's motorcycle (NEM) in order to meet other rescue service units there ( rendezvous system ). The use of emergency motorcycles is not a standard in the rescue service in Germany and is limited to a few pilot projects.

Areas of application

The emergency doctor's motorcycle is used , among other things, at major events and for medical stowage assistance .

The use of the emergency doctor's motorcycle helps to improve the efficiency of emergency operations and to make the structures in the rescue service more flexible, while a constant quality of care is guaranteed.

advantages

The use of an emergency motorcycle has several advantages over the use of an emergency doctor vehicle or ambulance . In the event of a traffic jam or high traffic density, the maneuverability and the smaller size of the motorcycle compared to a car mean that the emergency doctor usually arrives at the scene of the accident faster than if he were transported in a larger vehicle. The ambulance can drive on narrow paths and also move in the field, since the motorcycle is lighter than a car

Using an emergency doctor's motorcycle causes lower costs than using a car or helicopter.

disadvantage

The emergency doctor who drives an emergency doctor's motorcycle needs extensive driving experience in order to be able to drive safely and quickly even in emergencies and difficult situations such as a traffic jam. He also needs detailed local knowledge.

Less material can be transported in a motorcycle than in an emergency medical vehicle (NEF). If the emergency doctor arrives in front of the ambulance, he has only limited medical equipment available. To do this, he is on his own and has no support from rescue service personnel. If the ambulance goes with the patient for further care, the motorcycle remains at the scene.

Even when the special signaling system (blue light and emergency horn) is used, other road users perceive a motorcycle less well than a car. In winter and in bad weather, the motorcycle can usually not be used.

development

From 1998 to 2000 a pilot project was carried out on the use of emergency motorcycles. At the Weyhe - Leeste , Oberau and Pirmasens locations , 300 emergency trips were documented and scientifically evaluated. From 2000 to 2004 there was a second model phase in which another 450 missions were carried out and documented. In 2001 another 5 NEMs, including 2 BMW C1 scooters, were made available by BMW Motorrad. As the successor to the “NEM 2000” sponsoring association, the “Rettungsmotorrad eV” association was established at this time and an expansion of the concept testing including the “rescue motorcycle” function was developed. With the scientific support of Eduard Höcherl, a model evaluation began in Munich, Oberau / Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Reutlingen, Karlbad, Pirmasens, Arnsberg and Weyhe near Bremen. The project management remained with Hermann Munzel.

The model phase of the emergency doctor's motorcycle was completed in 2004.

In 2005 the “Förderverein Rettungsmotorrad e. V. “with the cost bearers, the health insurance companies, about agreeing a model supply contract according to § 73a SGB V. The responsible party continued to adhere to the existing legislation on emergency medical and first-aid rescue, an extension towards the inclusion of the NEM rescue equipment / rescue motorcycle was excluded.

The support association and the pilot project for emergency doctor operations with motorcycles were discontinued on December 31, 2006, in Germany motorcycles in the rescue service are still sometimes offered by various providers with paramedics , such as in Lower Saxony and Bavaria.

In Austria, medical motorcycles have been used continuously by the rescue organization "Österreichischer Rettungsdienst ÖRD" since April 1982 and have been part of the ÖRD rescue chain / First Responder ever since .

The South Tyrolean White Cross sets since 2018 in heavy traffic on motorways and major main roads with paramedics occupied Reiseenduros for patrols and as a first responder.

In Hungary motorcycles and scooters have been used for medical emergencies since 2001. These serve both as rapid response units and as operational support for serious operations by BLS vehicles.
