In the 18th and 19th centuries, the "Leister" are known as carters who drive the goods landed and manufactured in Bremen to the Bremen area and to southern Germany (Nuremberg). At the heyday of freight haulage, there are said to have been more than 170 carters in Leeste.

At this point in time, the communities of Kirchweyhe, Sudweyhe and Leeste were combined to form the unitary community of Weyhe. The town hall was on Henry-Wetjen-Platz next to the church.
