Notre-Dame-de-la-Joie ( Our Lady of Joy ) is a Roman Catholic chapel in Penmarch in Brittany . The chapel and the associated calvary have been classified as a monument historique since 1916 .

history

The Notre-Dame-de-la-Joie chapel was built at the end of the 15th century in the Flamboyant Gothic style directly on the Atlantic coast between the districts of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Guénolé of Penmarch. It should express the thanks of the seafarers to Our Lady when they have been saved from storms at sea.

The bell gable rises above the west wall of the chapel, which, completely walled up, only lets in light through three narrow notches. The floor plan of the church is rectangular with a straight choir closure, the vault consists of a wooden pointed barrel.

The Calvary to the south of the chapel dates from 1588 and was renovated in the 18th and 20th centuries.
