features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 50 to 65 millimeters. There is no sexual dimorphism between the sexes , as males and females have the same drawing elements. The forewings are slightly curved and form a strong point at the apex . A tail process is missing at the anal angle of the hind wings. All wing tops have a black base color, which is covered by a clear light blue to whitish pattern of spots. The drawing on the underside resembles the upper side in a slightly weakened form, but shows a black-brown basic color. A row of red spots stands out in the post-disk region , another single small red spot is in the basal region .

Pre-imaginal stages

The egg is round, smooth and creamy white to light yellow in color.

The caterpillar is predominantly black in its first stage in the front area, whitish at the end, pointing to the whole body surface short, branched thorns. In the second stage, the area behind the head swells, the surface is smooth and turns a dark brown. In the third and fourth stage, the caterpillars show short, lateral spines on the front three thorax segments and on the anal segment. The adult caterpillar has two eye-spots behind the head. There are two color morphs : yellow-brown or grass-green.

The pupa has an elongated shape, is predominantly green in color and has a horn-like outgrowth on the back of the head. It is attached to branches or leaves as a belt doll .

Distribution, subspecies and habitat

The species is widespread in India , Sri Lanka , Thailand , Malaysia , Myanmar , Laos , Cambodia , southern China , Taiwan , Korea , Vietnam , Indonesia , Japan and the Philippines . 13 subspecies are currently classified in the various occurrence areas . Graphium doson prefers to colonize evergreen deciduous forests as well as moist forest edges.

Way of life

Graphium doson when sucking on a damp ground

The moths fly in several generations a year. The eggs are laid individually on the top or bottom of young leaves of the food plant. It takes three to four days for the caterpillars to hatch, which then go through five stages to pupate. The puppet time averages nine days. While the females visit flowers to take in nectar, the males sometimes suckle in large numbers on the ground at damp places in the earth in order to take in liquids and minerals. The caterpillars feed polyphagously on the leaves of the Annonaceae , the laurel family (Lauraceae), the soap tree family (Sapindaceae) or the magnolia family (Magnoliaceae).
