Novi Kneževac ( Serbian - Cyrillic Нови Кнежевац , Hungarian Törökkanizsa , German  Neu-Kanischa ) is a town and municipality in the Vojvodina province in Serbia . The place is located on the eastern bank of the Tisza .

history

The first written mention of Novi Kneževac dates from the 9th century, mentioned under the name "Kneža". In the next century it was mentioned as "Kanjiša". Until the arrival of the Ottomans it was under the administration of the Kingdom of Hungary . In the 16th century, during the Ottoman administration, his name was known as "Turska Kanjiža" and there were already 30-40 houses in the settlement at the beginning of the 18th century.

In the 18th century it became part of the Habsburg monarchy as Neu-Kanischa . In 1922 the village was known as Nova Kanjiža, in 1935 it was renamed Novi Kneževac.
