Novuss

Novuss is from Latvia originating skill game for two or four players, the similarities with billiards and carrom has.

The Novuss gaming table is square, flat and divided into four play zones. Each zone belongs to the playing discs of another player. The gaming table has four pockets, one in each corner and the players' task is to push the wooden discs into these pockets. A stick ( cue ) is available for the player to shoot the wooden targets in the mesh pockets at the corners . The game is played in turns, each player bumping from their side of the table. If you play in pairs, the pairs take turns. The side that has their discs in their pockets first wins.

Novuss belongs to the family of billiards and pool games. However, the gaming table has foldable feet and is transportable. In addition, 2 sets of discs (16 + 16 pieces) of different colors (red and black) and two sticks belong to the play set, which is made entirely of wood.

Novuss is suitable for both children and adults and is easy to learn. Skill, visual acuity, reaction, accuracy and the ability to think ahead are required.

Novuss is considered a national sport in Latvia . It is known that the game appeared in 1927: sailors calling at English ports played a similar game in the local pubs. And so, based on drawings brought back from England, the first gaming table was made in Latvia. The first tables appeared in the ports of Ventspils , Liepāja , Tallinn and Riga, where the Novuss game continued to develop. The oldest records of the rules of the game date from 1930 (J. Pillikse and K. Teder “Korona õpetus”, in Estonian).

At that time it was called Novuss or Koroona . It is believed that the name Koroona comes from Estonia , as the game also established itself in the port cities there. But it spread faster in Latvia and soon became a national sport. The first professional competitions took place in 1932 and were won by Albert Raminsch .

The Novuss Federation of Latvia was founded on December 6, 1963. State championships have been held in individual competitions since 1964 and in team competitions since 1966. Men's, women's and children's teams (up to 15 years of age) were founded.

In 1980 the Novuss section comprised 55,000 members. District, city, state and world championships are now held. Novuss has been one of the three most popular sports in Latvia since 1993.

The game also established itself in the USA , Canada , Israel , Georgia , Ukraine , Australia , England , Russia , Belarus , Poland and Germany . You play Novuss / Koroona in Finland , Sweden , Norway and Denmark .

There are regular international competitions between Latvia and Estonia. World championships have been held since 1993, in which teams from countries in which Novuss has found a certain distribution take part.

On September 30th, 2006 Novuss was included in the offer of the 1st Baltic Children's Olympiad.

In January 2010 one of the candidate tasks in the Pro7 game show " Schlag den Raab " was to win a Novuss game. Stefan Raab decided this for himself.

In 2019 Novuss was accepted into the Erasmus + project .
