The Nuestra Señora del Pilar Church is a Catholic parish church in the El Toscal district of Santa Cruz de Tenerife . The church was consecrated to Our Lady on the Pillar .

history

The construction of the church began on July 7, 1752. The design came from the builder Juan Alonso García Ledesma. He also supervised the construction work until his death in 1755. At that time the nave was almost completed. From 1768 the choir was built. When the building was expanded between 1962 and 1967 based on plans by the architect Enrique Rumeu de Armas, two low aisles were created.

The church served the community of Nuestra Señora de la Concepcion as a branch church . After the abolition of the nearby Franciscan monastery of San Pedro Alcántara in 1848 was the monastery church to the parish church. This meant that there was no need for another building. The Nuestra Señora del Pilar church was no longer in use. From 1878 to 1895 it was a garrison church . The Order of the Claretians took over the church in 1896 as a subsidiary church of the San Francisco parish. The municipality of Nuestra Señora del Pilar has existed as an independent parish since 1963 .

Exterior view

The church stands on a terraced area. The main facade faces northeast towards Calle el Pilar. The entrance is closed by a semicircular arch. Above it, in a niche decorated with volutes, stands a figure of Mary with the child. The main nave is plastered and only the edges are visible. The two newly attached aisles are very low and stand out from the main nave due to their dark color. The bell wall on the back of the church is not visible from the front.

inner space

The main nave is separated from the crossing by a semicircular arch. There is an organ gallery on the entrance side. The ceiling is paneled with wood in the Mudejar style . The side walls of the central nave have been supported by reinforced concrete columns since the renovation in the 1960s. The walls of the aisles have colored glazing from floor to ceiling. The transept does not contain its own altars, but rather figures of saints on modern pedestals. Two figures of male saints stand in the niches of the baroque altar. The upper part consists of three carved relief images. The wooden ceiling above the chancel has a painted representation of the namesake. Parts of the ceiling are gilded.

Holy figures

In the transept there is a statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, one of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and one of Our Lady on Mount Carmel . The figure of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias, created in 1803 by Miguel Arroyo Villalba and clad in textiles, is nicknamed "La Republicana". The traditional Republicana procession through the El Toscal district takes place on Good Friday .
