Nummuli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As nummuli small disk-shaped or coin-shaped accumulation of substances in the superficial cornea called the eye. Nummuli cause corneal opacity. Nummuli form as the keratoconjunctivitis epidemica heals . When these nummuli occur, there is no longer any risk of infection. Nummuli can also appear after a keratoplasty . Nummuli arise from a cellular inflammatory reaction against the adenovirus or, after a keratoplasty, against the HLA antigen. The resulting infiltrates consist of immune complexes and an accumulation of fibroblasts , histiocytes and lymphocytes .

Complications and course

The patient's visual acuity can be severely impaired by the light scattering of these nummuli, because the scattering creates a glare effect. The impairment can last for weeks to months until it is improved by the regression of the nummuli. In rare cases, there is also impairment of vision.

therapy

The therapeutic use of ciclosporin in the form of eye drops in the chronic phase of the disease can accelerate the decline in nummuli. In some cases, surgical removal is recommended.
