Old church

history

For the church “in the north of Berlin”, a site near Brunnenstrasse was acquired. According to a Prussian law, "Lutherans who keep themselves separate from the Protestant regional church" - usually called Old Lutherans - were not allowed to build a building in the form of a church with a tower and bells. Consequently, the building is only listed as a chapel in contemporary directories and city maps . In the Pharus Plan of Berlin from 1905, however, it is referred to as the North Church . The foundation stone was laid on August 18, 1893 and the inauguration on July 3, 1894.

Building description

For the worship room, the altar was placed in the north and the church window on the side. There were skylight windows below the ceiling. The gallery for the organ and choir was located in the south of the chancel.

New Church

history

The new church is a replacement for the church that was destroyed in the night of November 23rd to 24th, 1943 and had to be demolished. The draft planning by the architect Helmut Krüger for the building complex of the new community center on the foundations of the old one envisaged a hall church and a community house with community room and parish apartment. The concretized construction plan was submitted to the building authority, which, however, did not accept the planned concept of arranging the parish hall and church lengthways one behind the other. Instead, the church and parish hall were to be arranged in a T-shape, with the church having a narrow side to be built directly on neighboring house number 12. On August 28, 1950, the foundation stone was laid for the parish hall. The shell was ready after six weeks . The interior work was slow. The move was supposed to be at the beginning of July 1950, but the church hall could not be consecrated until the 2nd Advent. At the same time the planning for the church building was completed. Execution began on Sunday Okuli 1958. Unlike in the past, no high hall church was to be built, but a building with a basement with the new church above. The basement was to serve as a temporary emergency church , later it was to be converted into a community hall.

Building description

The church itself is at the end of a block and does not have a steeple . The nave is reached on the first floor . Like so many modern churches from the 1960s, it has large colored windows behind the altar that stands on the long side. On the side wall there is another large window with colored rectangles that was donated by Konrad Adenauer . By the transverse arrangement, the ranks of the have pews much wider than deep.
