Only ( Pashtun نوڼ nūṇ ) is an Arabic letter that is part of the extended Arabic alphabet of the Pashtun language . It is derived from the Arabic letter Nun (ن) by adding a small circle called pandak , and is used exclusively in the Pashtun script .

The sound value in Pashto is a voiced retroflex nasal ( IPA : [ɳ] ). The Nur belongs next to Tte (ټ) , Ddal (ډ) and Rre (ړ) to the letters of the Pashtun script representing the retroflexed sounds. These phonemes do not appear in Arabic , so the letters were added to the original Arabic alphabet. Apart from the retroflex nasal, these phonemes also exist in a related form in Urdu , which also uses a modified Arabic script. There, however , the retroflex articulation site is not indicated by the pandak, but by a superscript small Ṭa (ط) is displayed.

The letter has only been part of the Pashtun alphabet since the spelling reform in Afghanistan in 1936. Until then, the voiced retroflex nasal in Pashtun was not given a letter of its own, but a digraph نړ represents.
