Nurbek Egen (Russian: Нурбек Эген; born December 3, 1975 in the Osh region , Kyrgyz Republic ) is a Russian and Kyrgyz film director .

Life

After graduating from high school with a focus on mathematics in his home country, Egen studied drama for two years at the Art School in Bishkek . In 1994 he began studying directing at the Moscow State Film School WGIK (Russian ВГИК), which he successfully completed in 2000. Between 2009 and 2010, Egen studied directing at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles.

While studying at the Moscow Film School, Egen made his first short films “One day older” (“На день старше” 1998) and “Closed Cosmos” (“Закрытый космос”, 1999). His next short film "Sanzhyra" ("Санжира", 2000) took part in around 50 international film festivals and was awarded the prize for Best Short Foreign Film at the Young Artist Awards in Los Angeles.

Egens' film " Kyrgyz dowry " ("Сундук предков", 2005) about the home trip of the young Kyrgyz Aidar and his French friend Isabel to the village of Aidar's family won several national and international prizes, including the Young Artist Awards in Los Angeles in 2006 the Outstanding International Drama Prize and the Audience Prize at the Festival of Eastern European Films in Cottbus. "Kyrgyz dowry" was awarded the title "Valuable" by the Wiesbaden film evaluation office .

The film "A Fighter Knows No Pain" ("Борцу не больно", 2010) received several prizes and awards at the national children's film festivals and the prize for the best director at the 10th Krasnogorsk Sports Film Festival.

In his artistic work, Egen often applies the Kyrgyz culture and the traditions of his home country. In the documentary "Manas emergence as a premonition" ("Рождение Манаса как предчувствие") Egen shows modern social and political life of Kyrgyzstan, as well as the history and culture of the country.

Egens' social drama “The Empty Home” “Пустой дом”, 2012) addresses migration. The symbiosis of cultures, but also their mutual repulsion and exploitation, are the main themes of this film. The film was nominated for the Grand Prix at the international festivals in Osaka and Sofia.

Nurbek Egen is currently involved in several cinema and film productions as a director. He is married with two children and lives with his family in Saint Petersburg .
