The Ny Kirke , ( German  New Church ), is a Romanesque round church in Nyker on the Danish island of Bornholm . It is considered the youngest of the four round churches on Bornholm and is the only one with only two storeys to be the smallest. It is consecrated to all saints.

History and architecture

The round church was built between 1150 and 1250. Like the other round churches, it was built as a fortified church with a flat plank roof for defense. The conical roof, the two outer retaining walls and the vestibule were not given until the late Middle Ages. Detailed representations of the church in the form of floor plans, sections and views (by Charles Christensen, 1939) can be found in.

As is customary on Bornholm, the bell tower stands free on the cemetery grounds; the lower storey is made of stone, the bell storey is made of half-timbering. Of the two bells, the smaller one was cast in 1639 for a church in Skåne , which at that time belonged to Denmark, the larger one in Lübeck around 1725.

inner space

The interior of the church (the round nave) is characterized by the central pillar, which with the outer wall absorbs the ceiling and roof loads. The pulpit is carved with biblical scenes that were created by the Flensburg carver Heinrich Ringerink . An hourglass (four hourglasses) from 1690 is located above the pulpit , which is supposed to remind of the transience of life. A large consecration cross in red can be seen on the inner wall of the choir . The choir with the altar and the baptismal font adjoins the round building.

In the vestibule there is a rune stone, a tombstone and a wooden tablet with coins. The tombstone shows a relief of the resurrection of Christ and an inscription in memory of the pastor Jens Nilsøn, who died in March 1648. The wooden panel shows copies of old coins (from 1286 to 1815) that were found in the church floor during restoration work around 1960.

Frescoes

On the central pillar there are well-preserved frescoes, they represent the Passion story in 13 fields and date from around 1300. The (partly repainted) frescoes on the walls are more recent, the frescoes above the choir arch are the youngest and come from the 18th century Century.
