Nyassachromis is a cichlid - genus , which is endemic in the East African Malawisee occurs. The scientific name refers to the distribution area (“Nyassa” = name of Lake Malawi in Tanzania + “chromis” = old name for cichlids).

features

Nyassachromis species are about 11.5 to 25.0 cm long. Compared to other Haplochromis relatives, they are more elongated and have a long tail stalk. The head is small and pointed, the mouth terminal and small. The genus lacks morphological peculiarities. In particular, the differentiation from the genus Copadichromis is difficult. Drawing patterns are usually not formed or are present at most as two longitudinal stripes. No vertical stripes are visible during courtship. Horizontal stripes are not or only very weakly developed.

Way of life

Like almost all cichlids of Lake Malawi are the Nyassachromis TYPES maternal mouth brooders . They live mainly in the sand zone, feed on zooplankton , phytoplankton , small invertebrates and algae and build sand cone nests for spawning.
