biography

Nyi Ageng Serang was born in 1752 under the name Raden Ajeng Kustiyah Wulaningish Retno Edhi in Serang, 40 kilometers north of Surakarta . Her father was Pangeran Natapraja (also known as Panembahan Serang), a ruler of Serang and the commander in chief of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I's army . She was a descendant of Sunan Kalijaga , an Islamic saint. The name Nyi Ageng Serang was given to her after her father died of an illness and she took his place.

She helped her father in the fight against the Dutch colonial government , which attacked him because, despite the prohibition by the Giyanti Treaty, he raised his own troops. After the fight, she was arrested and taken to Yogyakarta . After that, she was sent back to Serang.

At the beginning of the Javanese War in 1825, 73-year-old Nyi Ageng Serang took command of the rebel forces from a stretcher to help Diponegoro in the fight against the Dutch. During the war, she was accompanied by her son-in-law Raden Mas Pak-pak. She also became a war advisor. She fought in several areas including Purwodadi, Demak, Semarang , Juwana, Kudus, and Rembang. She was also tasked with defending the Prambanan temple complex from the Dutch. One of their best known strategies was the use of taro leaves as camouflage that were attached to stakes to look like real plants. After three years she gave up fighting, but her son-in-law continued to fight. Although she fought against the Dutch, she received a pension of 100 guilders a month from them .

She died in Yogyakarta in 1838 and was buried in Beku, in the Kulon Progo district.
