O3b is the name of commercial communications satellites from the British company O3b Networks , part of the SES group of companies. The satellite constellation was advertised as offering Internet access and telecommunications services to the 3 billion people in structurally weak areas of the world ("the other 3 billion"). The contract to launch the satellites by Arianespace was signed in December 2011. The satellites will be launched in groups of four and will travel on similar orbits.

construction

The three-axis stabilized satellites with 12 Ka-band - transponders fitted (by Thales 10) and 12 small antennas and may be used near the equator of the forwarding of Internet data in structurally weak areas. They were built on the basis of the ELiTeBus satellite bus from Thales Alenia Space . The satellites are supplied with energy via two solar cell panels and associated batteries. The drive and position control system consists of a total of eight small engines.

status

The first four satellites of this type were launched on June 25, 2013 at 19:27 UTC with a Soyuz-ST-B with Fregat-MT upper stage from the Center Spatial Guyanais in French Guiana into an approximately 7,825 km high orbit directly above the Brought to the equator . Four further launches, each with four satellites, took place on July 10, 2014, December 18, 2014, March 9, 2018 and April 4, 2019.

A second generation of seven “O3b mPower” satellites is to be launched in 2021 with two flights with the Falcon 9 rocket.
