Petrus Sylvius , actually Peter Penick (* 1470 in Forst / Niederlausitz , † 1547), was a Catholic writer and controversial theologian of the Reformation . He was a sharp opponent of Martin Luther . Name variants are Petrus Penick , Petrus Pienitius , Petrus de Forst , Peter Silvius and Petrus Forst .

Live and act

Sylvius studied in Leipzig from 1491 (matriculated as Petrus Penick de Forst), became a baccalaureus in 1501 , master's degree in 1508 and entered the Dominican order in the same year . In 1509 he was ordained a priest. In 1514 he traveled to Loretto and Rome , where he was exempted from the order by Pope Leo X for being ill.

Even before the Leipzig disputation in 1519, he wrote anti-Lutheran writings. From 1524 preacher in Cronschwitz near Weida and pastor in Weida and Lohma near Schmölln, he was expelled from both places by the Lutherans.

In 1527 he published the polemic by Johannes Cochläus "Against the reubian and murderous ranks of the Bawern" (1525). He lived for a few years without a job in Leipzig and Dresden and was next to Johannes Cochläus theological advisor to Duke George the Bearded . Through the intercession of the duke, he was chaplain in Rochlitz from 1528 to 1537 .

By 1534 he had about 30 books printed, mostly at his own expense, but also with the support of the Duke and the Leipzig magistrate. Almost all of them are directed against Luther and the Reformation in prose or in verse.

From 1530 to 1533 he published some sermons by Andreas Proles (e.g. Proles, Andreas: Sermones Dominkales Des gracious preacher Andree Prolis Etwan Vicarij Augustiner, 1530). His texts are characterized by an extremely sharp polemic in which Luther is referred to as the “most non-Christian”, devilishly possessed person, as the “trumpet of evil spirits” and “forerunner of the pure antichrist”.
