Andreas Proles

Andreas Proles (born October 1, 1429 in Altendresden ; † June 6, 1503 in Kulmbach ) was a German theologian who advocated strict observance of the rule of the order (observance), especially within the Augustinian order.

Life

Proles had been studying at the University of Leipzig since the summer semester of 1446 , acquired a baccalaureate at the artist faculty at the beginning of 1448 and a master's degree in the winter semester of 1450 . In 1451 he entered the Augustinian order, made his profession there in 1452 and was ordained a priest in December 1453 . He then studied theology in Perugia and returned to Germany as a lecturer . In 1456 he exercised this function in the Augustinerseminar in Magdeburg , but was appointed prior of the Himmelpforten monastery near Wernigerode that same year . In the spring of 1461 he was elected Provincial Vicar of the Augustinian Order and pursued in this office, which he held with a short interruption (1467–1473) until shortly before his death, with the greatest commitment to enforce the observance in the Augustinian order, whereby he praised his diplomatic skills reaped, but because of its religious policy, it experienced opposition especially within the order itself. He died in the convent in Kulmbach. His successor was Johann von Staupitz .

Proles was praised as an outstanding preacher by his colleague Johannes von Paltz . As such, he primarily addressed religious. But he is also said to have preached publicly up to three times a day to a large audience. In his sermons, religious life itself and the sacrament of Holy Mass were the main themes .
