OCAD is a graphics program that was originally developed for drawing orienteering maps , but is now also used in cartography for city maps, topographical and thematic maps.
history
In 1992, the Steinegger Software company was founded by Hans Steinegger.
In his spare time, Steinegger developed the first version of OCAD as early as 1988. After founding the company, he devoted himself full-time to further development. In particular, he has advanced the development from a special program for orienteering maps to a general cartographic drawing program.
Hans Steinegger did orienteering as an elite runner at a young age . Before developing OCAD, he drew a number of maps with Rapidograph and Indian ink . This practical experience, in addition to professional knowledge, formed the basis for the development of OCAD. Hans Steinegger died on June 19, 2004 of heart failure. OCAD AG was founded in May 2005.

The program is now standard for creating orienteering maps. It is especially common in Scandinavia . OCAD is also becoming increasingly important in commercial cartography . It is used in various industries: publishing cartography, cartographic institutes, land surveying offices, city, district and municipal administrations, fire brigades, graphic companies, planning and engineering offices, colleges, universities, the military, sports and leisure clubs, etc.
There are 4 different editions, one of which is suitable for cartography and 3 of them for orienteering:

For cartography : This edition is aimed at the production of city maps, topographical and thematic maps. They include a powerful symbol editor, smart editing and drawing tools, generalization tools, import and visualization of geodata , multi-representation, map layout layers, web map export assistant, WMS connection, GPS real-time data acquisition, step-by-step Wizard for the analysis of LiDAR data , different visualization methods of thematic data, as well as different diagram types and much more.
For orienteering : These editions are specially designed for the requirements of map creation in orienteering with a step-by-step wizard for analyzing LiDAR data, GPS real-time data acquisition, smart editing and drawing tools, generalization tools, map layout layers, Course setting for orienteering and much more.

development
OCAD differs significantly from other graphics programs in that it does not work with layers, but with (cartographic) symbol sets, with each symbol being assigned a fixed hierarchy level. For example, roads are always printed over meadows, not the other way around. This saves a lot of work in cartography with its fixed superiors and subordinates. In addition to the usual drawing functions and the processing of raster graphics , OCAD has the option of a database connection and the import of GPS data. It is also possible to create interactive internet maps.
