OSADL

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Open Source Automation Development Lab ( OSADL ) is a registered cooperative with the aim of promoting and coordinating the development of open source software for mechanical and plant engineering and for the automation industry. It specifically represents the interests of machine builders, manufacturers of automation hardware and software, and open source software service providers. Any company worldwide can become a member of the cooperative.

founding

When it was founded, various types of company (association, foundation, GmbH, cooperative, etc.) were up for discussion. The close ethical relationship between the concept of a cooperative, which was already formulated in the 19th century, and the open source movement that was only a few decades old was the decisive factor in founding a cooperative. It was founded on December 8, 2005; In August 2006, the OSADL was entered in the cooperative register at the Stuttgart court of registry under the number 440085.

Preamble to the Cooperative Statute

“The automation industry and its suppliers benefit particularly from open source operating systems such as GNU / Linux or FreeBSD , as this ensures long production cycles, quick troubleshooting and independence from individual software manufacturers. However, this branch requires specific extensions of the operating system, such as real-time capability , compatibility with these extensions must be certified, and standardized software interfaces must be available. The aim of the Open Source Automation Development Lab OSADL is to develop these requirements. "

Regular and Academic Members

The 70 member companies (as of July 2018) are well-known domestic and foreign companies. The 29 academic members are mostly subject-specific institutes from universities and colleges in Europe , especially Germany, but also from India and China .

activity

The OSADL acts, among other things, as a "buying group for open source software", i. H. The membership fees are used to award development contracts for open source software projects that are required or approved by the majority of members. In addition, the OSADL pursues the standardization of software interfaces for the automation industry and their certification. In addition, the OSADL develops concepts for the practical procedure when using open source software in industrial products with regard to legal and administrative aspects. Syndic of the OSADL is RA Dr. Till Jaeger , a co-founder of ifrOSS .
