Thomas Gleixner (born February 24, 1962 in Kempten (Allgäu) ) is a German programmer .

Life

Thomas Gleixner studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Munich . He is primarily involved in the development of the Linux kernel and has made significant contributions here.

He is the managing director of his company Linutronix, which is a founding member of the Open Source Automation Development Lab . Gleixner is also a speaker with lectures on Linux and its application in embedded systems and embedded real-time systems , in particular on the subject of "RT_Preempt Patch for Linux" (real-time for mainline Linux).

Gleixner lives in Uhldingen-Mühlhofen on Lake Constance , is married and has five children. Since 1981 he has been a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Tuiskonia Munich in the CV .

Contributions to the Linux kernel

Gleixner continuously makes smaller and larger contributions to the Linux kernel. Among the developers who contributed to the kernel between version 2.6.12 and version 3.2, it ranks sixth with 2190 changes (0.8% of changes). If only the versions between 2.6.35 and 3.2 are taken into account, it is in second place with 798 changes (1.1% of these changes).

His larger projects include:

  • High Resolution Timers (hrtimer)
  • Realtime Linux; Here he works closely with Ingo Molnar together
  • NAND flash driver

He is one of the initiators of the merging of the source code for the i386 and x86_64 architectures. Since October 2007 he has been the maintainer of the newly created x86 architecture together with Ingo Molnár and H. Peter Anvin .

Gleixner has been invited to the annual Linux Kernel Summit , a non-public meeting of the most active kernel developers, for several years.

In January 2018, Linus Torvalds thanked Gleixner on the Linux Kernel Mailing List for his coordination and work in fixing the security vulnerabilities known as Meltdown and Specter in modern CPUs.
