The OWR GmbH (formerly Odenwaldwerke Ritterbach) is a German manufacturer of equipment and systems for NBC protection . The GmbH is based in Elztal-Rittersbach ( Baden-Württemberg ).

history

The original company Odenwaldwerke Rittersbach was founded in 1947 by Wilhelm Kern and August Großkinsky. Initially, the company made wooden boxes to house tools and equipment. In addition to the private sector, the occupying powers of the time were also among the customers. In 1951 the company started manufacturing tables, chairs and other furniture for living and dining areas.

In the course of time, the company also received orders from government agencies in Germany and abroad via the orders of the American occupying powers, which have remained one of the most important customers to the present day. The manufacture of special boxes was quickly expanded to include the production of construction trains and special vehicles, among others for the technical relief organization and the Federal Border Guard . This was soon followed by orders for the Federal Office of Defense Technology and procurement to equip the newly founded Bundeswehr .

In 1980, the furniture construction sector was outsourced to Elztal-Dallau, but was abandoned shortly afterwards for economic reasons, so that the company has since then only devoted itself to vehicle and equipment production. The core areas of production included low-torsion platform mountings for trucks, and from the 1980s on, vehicles and devices for NBC defense and disaster control as well as electronic braking and control devices.

The OWR supplies military and civil defense organizations around the world; apart from Germany, there are separate companies in Switzerland, Turkey, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Canada, the USA and Korea.

Odenwaldwerke Rittersbach , which employed 130 people in Rittersbach, went bankrupt in May 2003 and was taken over by OWR AG , which was founded by a group of investors .

From September 30, 2003 to summer 2005, the former general of the German armed forces, Klaus Reinhardt, was on the AG's supervisory board . In 2007 the board of directors included General (retired) Klaus Naumann , Lord Peter Inge (British Field Marshal, retired) and John J. "Jack" Sheehan (retired General of the US Marines), other former high-ranking military personnel. In the spring of 2009, the AG, held by a shareholder, was renamed a GmbH.
