Obama josefi is a Brazilian type of land planarians .

features

Obama josefi has a lance-shaped body, which is very flat in large individuals. They can reach a body length of up to 130 millimeters.

The color of O. josefi varies depending on the age of the individuals. The basic color of young individuals is yellowish, a dark brown to black stripe runs lengthways along the back center line of the body, with other stripes of the same color running parallel to it. The stripes do not run to the front end, which is orange in color.

When they reach sexual maturity, the animals develop dark patches of skin behind the orange front end, so that color gradations between yellowish and brown areas are less noticeable. In adult individuals, the number of skin spots is so large that the back has a uniform greenish dark brown color. The front end retains its orange color, although this is darker than that of young animals.

distribution

The habitat of O. josefi are humid forests in the northeast of Rio Grande do Sul and in the east of Santa Catarinas , in southern Brazil.

nutrition

Obama josefi eats Endeavouria septemlineata (not visible). The body forms a "tunnel" that holds the prey in place.

In the natural habitat , O. josefi feeds on native land planarians .

Laboratory experiments have shown that O. josefi caught and consumed the land planaria Endeavouria septemlineata , which is invasive in Brazil and originates from the Pacific region.

etymology

The name Obama is derived from the Tupi language that was spoken on the Atlantic coast of Brazil . It is a combination of the words oba ( German leaf ) and ma ( German animal ). This refers to the outer, leaf-like shape.

The species name josefi honors the Hungarian zoologist Josef Hauser , founder of the institute for the study of planarians at the Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos .
