Obama maculipunctata is a medium-sized land planaria with a lanceolate body. Individuals reach a body length of a little more than 70 millimeters. The basic color of the back is light brown, with a large number of fine black dots and irregular gray spots that are more pronounced on the sides and give the body a marbled appearance. The front third of the abdomen shows a pale yellow color, which turns orange towards the middle of the body to the end of the body.

Many eyes of O. maculipunctata are distributed on the first millimeters of the body on the edge, further back there are eyes mainly on the back side, where they occupy the midline.

distribution

The habitat of O. maculipunctata is formed by moist forests in the northeast of Rio Grande do Sul and in the east of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, as well as plantations of Brazilian araucarias and pines .

etymology

The name Obama is derived from the Tupi language that was spoken on the Atlantic coast of Brazil . It is a combination of the words oba ( dt. Leaf ) and ma ( dt. Animal ). This refers to the outer, leaf-like shape.

The species epithet maculipunctata is derived from the Latin words macula ( dt. Spot ) and punctus ( dt. Point ) and refers to the dorsal coloration of the species.
