Obed-Edom

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Old Testament, Obed-Edom is the name of a man from Gath , in whose house King David left the Ark of the Covenant .

etymology

The name Obed-Edom ( Hebrew עֹבֵד אֱדֹם Oved Edom ) is made up of Obed, an active participle “the servant”, and the proper name Edom. Edom designates on the one hand a neighboring people of Judah, on the other hand, but also a god, which is probably what this name means. So it means "the servant (of the god) Edom".

In the Septuagint the name is given both with Αβδεδωμ Abdedom and with the variant Αββεδαρα (μ) Abbedara (m) , in Josephus the name also appears in the form Ωβαδαδομος Ōbadadomos . Perhaps the transformations of the name represent an attempt to hide the stain that the bearer of the name Obed-Edom could not have been a devotee of YHWH .

biography

Obed-Edom is mentioned in 2 Sam 6.10  EU as Gatiter. When King David the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem wanted to convict, there was an incident: On the threshing floor Nachons the Zugrinder the car slid out on which the charge was. When Usa reached for the ark to hold it, God let him die because he should not have touched the ark. As a result, David was afraid to take the ark as far as Jerusalem and instead brought it to the house of Obed-Edom. The ark stayed there for three months and brought blessings to this and his house, which is to be understood materially. After the three months, David had the ark brought into town.

More name bearers

Another Obed-Edom, but perhaps the same, is according to 1 Chr 15.18  EU the progenitor of a family of gatekeepers or temple singers. Furthermore, 2 Chr 25,24  EU mentions an Obed-Edom as guardian of the temple treasures under the king Amaziah .
