The trolleybus Słupsk was the trolleybus system of the Polish city of Słupsk ( German Stolp ), it existed from 1985 to 1999. Its three lines served the districts of Zatorze, Śródmieście and Westerplatte, the responsible transport company was - as with the urban bus service - WPK Słupsk , from the 1999 MZK Słupsk emerged .
history
The first plans for a trolleybus system in what was then Stolp date back to the 1930s and should replace the Stolper tram in the long term. At that time a line was supposed to connect Kublitz with Groß Brüskow . However, this was not implemented.
At the end of the 1970s, WPK Słupsk planned again a trolleybus network. Five lines were planned, including an overland line to Ustka, 18 kilometers away . Construction of the first line began in April 1985.
On July 20, 1985, the first trolleybus line A was opened between Rzymowskiego Street and Kopernika Street with a length of 4.7 kilometers. A second line B from Rzymowskiego Street to Hubalczyków Street went into operation on November 11, 1986. A third line C was established on June 27, 1987 between Rzymowskiego and Hubalczyków streets, it ran through Kopernika street. The depot was located on the site of the former tram depot . The opening of lines D and E failed because of the poor economic situation in Poland at the time.
In the early 1990s, 10 trolleybuses of the type ZiU-9 and one Ikarus 280E were retired, which led to a lack of vehicles. So three Jelcz PR110 buses were converted into trolleybuses. In July 1997, Słupsk exchanged seven operational trolleybuses with Tychy for seven omnibuses. The remaining eight vehicles were insufficient to fully serve the network. In 1999 Słupsk had only seven trolleybuses in good technical condition. The following arguments against the trolleybus network were highlighted:
- Maintaining the infrastructure for some vehicles was inefficient
- Cables supplying the substations should be replaced
- Trolleybuses slow down traffic
- The system is old and desolate
- Substations produce too much electrical energy
In mid-May 1999, the overhead line in Hubalczyków Street was dismantled, which resulted in the closure of lines B and C. The last trolleybus operated on October 18, 1999 on line A. The catenary infrastructure was removed in the following weeks. In place of the former depot on Kopernika Street, there is now a housing estate.
The decision to shut down the trolleybus network was repeatedly criticized by the media, residents and city councils. Słupsk City Council has been accused of taking the decision without consulting residents and city councils, who were mainly in favor of keeping the trolleybuses.
