The place name is derived from the river Pall, which flows through the place. The addition of Ober- demarcates it from the village of Niederpallen, which lies a little downstream.

However, the time of origin of the place cannot be derived from the river name. However, the spelling Pilldorf and Palldorf for Oberpallen have been handed down from the Middle Ages . The ending -dorf suggests that the settlement emerged during the Franconian period .
