The Chief Justice of the United States / ʧiːf ʤʌstɪs / ( German Supreme Justice of the United States ) is the nominal head of the federal courts of the United States . The incumbent has been John Roberts since September 29, 2005 .
The chief responsibility of the Chief Justice is to preside over the Supreme Court . However, when the court makes decisions, he has no higher voting rights than any of his eight colleagues. The office is therefore primus inter pares . In addition, he traditionally takes the oath of office from the president on inauguration and presides over impeachment proceedings by the Senate against the president or his vice-president . He also chairs the United States Court Conference. The law also assigns him various other administrative tasks.
Like all federal judges, the Chief Justice is appointed by the President with the approval of the Senate. Some chairmen, such as William Howard Taft or John Roberts , received the office without prior , others such as William H. Rehnquist after previous work at the Supreme Court.
