Obligado is a city and a district in the Itapúa department in southern Paraguay , 35 km from Encarnación . It was founded by German immigrants and has a population of around 17,000. It borders the city of Hohenau , both city centers are only separated by a main street.
history
The land on which the city is located initially belonged to an Argentine named Dr. Obligado. In 1912 the parcels were measured and 40,000 hectares were sold to German colonists. The founding fathers of the colony were Rudolf Müller and Wilhelm Ymlauer. The new place was named after the previous landowner Obligado. After Hohenau it was the second German colony within the United Colonies of Itapúa , to which Bella Vista also belongs. Later immigrants came from Switzerland, Belgium, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Japan and other countries.
economy
The fertile soil favors agriculture and animal husbandry, which employ 80% of the population. Soy, corn and wheat are grown and cattle and pigs are raised. But trade and the service industry also play an economic role. There are large supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, various service companies, luxury hotels and a university. The Obligado district is considered the richest and most modern of the United Colonies and the largest industrial center of Itapúa.
