Obra (ship, 1888)

The Obra was a former Danish or Norwegian steam passenger ship captured by the German Wehrmacht during World War II and then used by the Air Force as an auxiliary air traffic control ship , tender and training ship .

history

Ferry service 1888–1940

The ship was launched in 1888 with hull number 146 at the Burmeister & Wain shipyard in Copenhagen for the Danish shipping company DFDS with the name Sønderjylland . It was 50.61 m long and 7.24 m wide and measured 551 GRT . Its triple expansion steam engine produced 530 hp and allowed a top speed of 11.5 knots . With its bunker supply of 95 tons of coal, the ship could cover up to 2050 nautical miles . The ship could carry up to 230 passengers. From 1888 to 1903 it mainly served the Copenhagen - Fredericia - Middelfart - Kolding route . On March 19, 1903, it was sold to the Norwegian ferry company Christianssands Dampskibsselskab and renamed Jylland . The ship now provided ferry service from Kristiansand to Frederikshavn , and later to Hirtshals Havn in North Jutland .

Military service 1940–1944

During the Second World War , the ship was captured during the German occupation of Denmark on April 23, 1940 in Hirtshals and, after appropriate refitting, was taken over by the Air Force on June 11, 1940 and put into service on June 12 as the auxiliary air traffic control ship Obra . 1941 was as tender the Seefliegerhorst Parow assigned where it served in succession as a training ship at the Great fighter pilot school (lake) and in the search and escort squadron.

Downfall

On the morning of April 22, 1944, the Obra ran to a mine southeast of Greifswalder Oie . After a subsequently performed boiler explosion the ship sank at 54 ° 12 '  N , 14 ° 6'  O coordinates: 54 ° 12 '  N , 14 ° 6'  O . Nine crew members were killed.
