The Ocean Beach Railway (OBR) is a museum railway in Dunedin , on the southeast coast of the South Island of New Zealand .

The Otago branch of the operating company New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society , later Otago Railway and Locomotive Society , was the first company in New Zealand when it was founded in 1960 to acquire a historic steam locomotive with the aim of operating it as a museum locomotive. In 1963 she put the first New Zealand museum railway with passenger traffic into operation.

location

The Ocean Beach Railway runs on Ocean Beach parallel to the beach from John Wilson Drive in Saint Kilda to Muana Rua Road at the sports field diagonally across from Forbury Park Raceway . The route runs near the former Ocean Beach Branch , but not on the same route.

history

SA Rockliff and some members of the branch of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society in Otago offered at an auction of the Otago Harbor Board 20 NZD on a small 9 t Fowler 0-4-0T tank locomotive with the manufacturer number N o 15912 from 1921, the had been used by the Public Works Department as their N o 540. The bid was successful, making this locomotive the first museum locomotive in New Zealand. Your locomotive whistle rang for the first time in August 1961 on the site of the former Ocean Beach station.

The Ocean Beach Domain Board allowed approximately two feet of track to be laid in Kettle Park along the Saint Kilda Modeling Club property. The company received surplus narrow-gauge railroad tracks from Dunedin City Council . Passenger traffic began in the festival week of 1963 with the PWD 540 and a two-axle high-sided gondola that carried around 2,700 passengers. The railway line was then extended on the route of the Dunedin Peninsula and Ocean Beach Railway to Saint Clair.

In the course of the following years the Ocean Beach Railway extended its own railway line and increased its collection with other locomotives which it acquired or received from Milburn Lime & Cement, the Otago Harbor Board as well as McDonalds Lime and others. Additional vehicles, such as historic passenger and freight cars, were acquired by New Zealand Railways (NZR), including the remains of two cars from the Dunedin & Port Chalmers Railway . A locomotive shed and later a wagon shed were built and secured by a vandal-proof 2.45 m (8 foot ) high fence.

dare

The Ocean Beach Railway has several historic railroad cars:

  • A 193 and A 210 , two 43 foot (13 m ) long passenger cars built at the Addington Workshops in 1883 and 1886 .
  • A 529 , a 12.5 m (41 foot) long so called 'Vogelbauer' car, which was built by built in the Addington Workshops in 1897 and converted into a ministerial car in 1904 before being taken to E A 1564, South Island in 1939 Plumbers and Fitters Coach was rebuilt.
  • A F 874 , a 14.5 m (47 feet 6 inch ) long 'carvan' or combined freight and passenger car with a conductor's compartment.
  • D 139 , a 6.5 m (21 ft 6 in) long two-axle passenger car built at Hyslops in Dunedin in 1877.

The Ocean Beach Railway is known, among other things, for its enthusiasm for the restoration of freight cars. For example, the museum owns the hand-operated 5 ton Ransome & Rapier crane No. 287 from 1874. The museum also owns the frames of two former Dunedin & Port Chalmers Railway Company vehicles, of which it is not entirely certain whether they belonged to freight or passenger cars.

business

The Ocean Beach Railway runs on either steam or diesel locomotives on weekends from the Labor weekend in October to the ANZAC weekend in April. The T R 81, Kerr Stuart 4185 and D SA 252 locomotives are operational while the A67 is being overhauled. The overhaul work mostly takes place on Saturdays, and visitors are welcome to view the workshops and renovations.
