The Oculus Optics GmbH (proper spelling: Oculus), headquartered in Wetzlar district Dutenhofen is a medium-sized company in the optical industry. The company with around 250 employees (at the headquarters) offers devices and instruments for eye examinations. The company develops and produces its ophthalmic products for the international market. His worldwide clientele includes ophthalmologists , opticians and optometrists . In addition to a worldwide dealer network, Oculus has its own branches in the USA, Hong Kong, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Spain. 70% of the company's sales are exported to over 80 countries around the world.

history

The company was founded in Berlin in 1895 as A. Mager Spezialfabrik ophthalmic instruments by Alois Mager . With constant further development of the products and an expansion of the export business, the company survived the global economic crisis and a workforce of 50 employees was achieved. In 1932 the company was renamed Oculus GmbH .

After the end of the Second World War , a large part of the special machines and operating equipment was dismantled and transported to Russia. The company, located in the east of Berlin, was to be converted into a state- owned company . Therefore, the managing director Wilhelm Mager initially founded an alternative company in the west of Berlin. Due to the increasingly precarious situation in isolated West Berlin, Wilhelm Mager and his brother-in-law Kurt Kirchhübel decided in 1947 to start a new company in western Germany. The choice of location fell on Dutenhofen near the city of Wetzlar with its differentiated optical-precision engineering industry.

The company's development was accompanied by close cooperation with science and ophthalmological practice, which led to a number of new designs in pleoptics and orthoptics ( ophthalmoscope with fixation star, visuscope, synoptophore , euthyscope, coordinator for special training in the foveal direction of vision). The cooperation with the University Eye Clinic in Tübingen enabled the technical implementation of the Tübingen hand perimeter from 1959, which was built until 1982 and used worldwide in research and practice. Oculus has been cooperating with Nidek in Japan since 1985. The ophthalmological devices developed by Nidek complemented the Oculus product range and Oculus secured exclusive distribution for Germany.

Since the 1980s and 1990s, electrical engineering has increasingly complemented the traditional precision mechanics and optics technology fields in which Oculus operates. A number of PC and electronic controlled ophthalmic devices have been developed. In 2002, the automatically rotating 3D Scheimpflug camera Pentacam was presented as a diagnostic device for making findings in the area of the anterior segment of the eye .
