Oder winter floods 1981/82

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oder winter floods of 1981/82 developed into an unusually strong ice flood . High precipitation on the upper reaches of the Oder caused high water levels in the river in October and November. Furthermore, in December 1981 there was heavy ice formation on the Oder at low temperatures of down to minus 20 degrees Celsius. The ice core in the river was up to three feet thick. A temporary thaw on the upper reaches of the Oder in Silesia at the turn of the year caused a lot of meltwater to drain away in this situation . In connection with a subsequent period of frost, a strong ice drift developed , which caused ice dislocations of up to three meters in height. In the area of the ice level, water rises from one to one and a half meters. Since January 12, the German-Polish icebreaker fleet has been working its way up from the lower Oder to break up the ice.

In the Oderbruch

The dikes were constantly patrolled by dike walkers and all preparations were made by the state authorities for a quick evacuation of people, livestock and property. Up to 60 cm thick ice floes piled high above the dikes. The inlet structure in the Oder dike near Stützkow was destroyed by the ice masses. A backwater of the catfish in the area of the Heinrichslust park put Schwedt / Oder at risk of flooding. It could only be averted by an additional emergency dike parallel to the road in the direction of the paper mill. A helicopter squadron of the NVA from Brandenburg-Briest airfield was stationed at Marxwalde airfield . It should bomb ice dislocations near Groß Neuendorf . However, there was no real use.

The flood situation eased in the first weeks of February.
