The most severe or flood catastrophe of the 20th century in the Oderbruch occurred in the spring of 1947. On March 21, in the evening on the night of March 22 formed sea ice due to ice conditions near the Umflutkanals at Küstrin-Kietz an ice barrier. Ice dislocations also formed north of Reitwein . This dammed large amounts of water within a short time. In the morning of March 22, 1947 at 1 a.m., the Oder dike near Reitwein was finally flooded. The top of the dike was washed over by the water in two places over a length of over 100 meters. Areas of the dike top were quickly destroyed over a width of about 300 meters and a depth of one meter. The flood even reached Bad Freienwalde (Oder) , several kilometers away from the river , where the main post office building in the city center is where a memorial stone is today. More than 20,000 people were left homeless at the time.
The head of the disaster control department of the Märkisch-Oderland district administration also confirms an ultimately unsuccessful deployment of Red Army bombers against the dangerous ice dislocations on the Oder in 1947. In the morning of March 22nd, eight bombs were dropped by Soviet planes and four more bombs in the afternoon. More bombs were also dropped on March 23. However, all measures did not bring the hoped-for result. It was not until March 24 that the transfer broke up around 9 p.m.
